Archbishop Aleixo de Menezes

Following the death of Mar Abraham in 1597, Dom Aleixo de Menezes, the Archbishop of Goa, moved quickly to bring the St. Thomas Christians of Malabar under the direct authority of the Portuguese Padroado and the Latin Church. He appointed the Jesuit Fr. Francis Ros as Apostolic Vicar. However, according to the long-established custom of the Malabar Church, Archdeacon Geevarghese (George of the Cross) had already assumed the administration of the Church after the Metropolitan’s death.

Since the Archdeacon and the clergy opposed the appointment of Francis Ros as their ecclesiastical superior, Menezes reduced Ros’s role to that of an adviser. The Archdeacon convened an assembly of clergy and lay leaders, which resolved that they would not accept any bishop who had not been approved by their traditional Patriarch.

In December 1598, Menezes began his visitation of the Syriac churches of Malabar. At the Vaippicotta (Vypeen) Seminary, he ordered the clergy to discontinue commemorating the Patriarch of Babylon during the Holy Qurbana and imposed ecclesiastical censures on those who disobeyed. He also administered the Sacrament of Confirmation according to the Latin rite, a practice unfamiliar to the East Syriac tradition.

During Holy Week of 1599, Menezes attempted to ordain clergy at the church of Udayamperoor. Archdeacon Geevarghese publicly opposed the ordinations and declared that anyone ordained without the approval of the traditional ecclesiastical authority would not be accepted for ministry in the Syriac churches. Despite the resistance, Menezes proceeded to ordain dozens of candidates at Udayamperoor, Kaduthuruthy, and Paravur.

When Menezes arrived at the ancient church of Kaduthuruthy to celebrate the Holy Week liturgies, sections of the local clergy protested and appealed to the Queen of Vadakkumkoor. Nevertheless, he remained there, brought a choir from Cochin, blessed the holy oils on Holy Wednesday, washed the feet of the clergy on Maundy Thursday, and celebrated the Good Friday services. These ceremonies gradually won the acceptance of many local faithful, enabling him to continue his pastoral visitation to churches such as Mulanthuruthy and Udayamperoor. Contemporary Portuguese accounts describe these events as preparations for the Synod of Diamper, while later Syriac traditions often portray them as part of the wider process of Latinization.
