The Jews were one of the ancient foreign communities that settled in Kerala. Jewish colonies existed in places such as Kodungallur, Pullut, Chendamangalam, North Paravur, and Fort Kochi. Although their population in these settlements was relatively small, they possessed a rich collection of traditional folk songs.
A compilation of the folk songs of the Kerala Jewish community was published by Dr. Scaria Zacharia under the title Karkuzhali. Dr. Zacharia, a native of Changanassery, is a distinguished Malayalam scholar and an eminent researcher in Church history. The studies conducted in Jerusalem by Dr. P. M. Jussay and Shalva Weil significantly contributed to this publication.
At the symposium organized during the Platinum Jubilee of the Diocese of Kottayam in 1986, Dr. P. M. Jussay presented a paper examining the similarities between the songs and rituals of the Jews and the Knanaya community. This paper was later included in the book Symposium on Knanaites. In his study, Jussay highlighted several Knanaya songs alongside comparable Jewish folk songs.
An important question remains: while relatively small communities such as the Southists (Thekkumbhagar/Knanaya) and the Kerala Jews have published comprehensive collections of their folk songs in book form, why do other, much larger communities lack similar compilations of their traditional songs?
Since the Southists used the Syriac language for communication and liturgical worship and followed the Syriac liturgical tradition, it is only natural that their folk songs reflect Syriac linguistic and cultural characteristics. At the same time, these ancient Southist songs also incorporate the Dravidian poetic metres and musical traditions of the land in which they lived, resulting in a unique blend of Syriac and indigenous Kerala cultural influences.
