The Ancient Songs (Purathanappattukal) have been continuously republished by the Kottayam Catholic Mission Press, under the Archdiocese of Kottayam, beginning with the second edition in 1935. Having now reached the eleventh edition, more than 10,000 copies have been printed.
Ironically, although many institutions have been established with the aim of preserving and promoting the Syriac heritage of the Indian Church, many of them still do not possess even a single copy of Purathanappattukal. This perhaps reflects an inadequate appreciation of the historical value of these songs. If every Syriac Church institution ensured that it possessed at least one copy before making claims regarding their authorship or heritage, these songs could open significant new avenues for understanding the historical sources of the Church.
Each edition has been prepared with meticulous scholarly care. In this regard, the contribution of Dr. Jacob Vellian deserves special recognition. He edited and published the fifth through the tenth editions of the collection. He was also responsible for collecting the Panan songs about Knai Thoma (Thomas of Cana) and incorporating them into the published volume.
Another scholar who played a pivotal role in establishing the historical significance of the ancient songs is Dr. Jacob Kollaparambil. Although he did not publish a separate book exclusively devoted to Purathanappattukal, his major works on the Knanaya community—including The Babylonian Origin of the Southists among St. Thomas Christians, Knanaya Community in Kerala History, and his influential article on the historical sources of the Knanaya community published in a volume edited by Fr. Jacob Vellian—are founded largely upon his extensive study of these ancient songs.
Likewise, Fr. Kollaparambil’s studies on the St. Thomas Christians, including works on the Coonan Cross Oath (1653), the Archdeacon of All India, and the history of the St. Thomas Christians (published posthumously by Fr. Sunny Kokkaravalayil through Jett Publications), also make extensive use of Purathanappattukal as primary historical sources.
His research, grounded in historical, geographical, and cultural analysis, has made an invaluable contribution to the study of Kerala Christian history in general and to Knanaya historical and cultural studies in particular.
Academic Research
The ancient songs have also become the subject of postgraduate and doctoral research in several universities in Kerala.
In 2001, Prof. Babu Thomas Poozhikkunnel, a member of the Sankranthi parish, published a book entitled Knanaya Wedding Songs: Tradition and Meaning. The work originated as his M.Phil. dissertation submitted to Mahatma Gandhi University under the guidance of Dr. D. Vinayachandran. While the principal focus of the study is the Knanaya wedding songs, it also examines songs associated with motherhood and provides a concise description of traditional wedding rituals. The book serves as an important resource for understanding the symbolism and ritual significance of the wedding songs.
Another significant contribution came from Dr. C. Deepa, a member of the St. Joseph’s Congregation, who completed her Ph.D. at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, under the supervision of Dr. Scaria Zacharia. Her dissertation was later published in 2011 under the title Ancient Songs of the Nasranis: A Folklore Study.
This study approaches the various editions of Purathanappattukal from the perspective of folklore studies, tracing the evolution of the text from the first edition published by P. U. Lucas to the present. It examines changes introduced in successive editions and explores how these developments reflect the evolving identity consciousness of the Knanaya community.
At the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Kerala, Fr. Baiju Mathew completed an M.Phil. in Manuscriptology under the guidance of Dr. Zainaba M., Head of the Faculty. His dissertation, titled Selected Ancient Songs of the Southist Syriac Christians: Textual Editing, is regarded as the first academic study based directly on the palm-leaf manuscripts of the ancient songs.
Building upon this work, he is currently pursuing doctoral research on Ancient Songs of the Southist Syriac Christians: Textual Editing and Study. One of the principal objectives of this research is to locate and document all surviving palm-leaf manuscript copies of the ancient songs preserved in different parts of the world.
In addition, Susan Elias Pulimoottil, of Chungam Parish, is pursuing a Ph.D. in English Literature at Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, with research focusing on the Knanaya ancient songs and traditional customs, further demonstrating the growing academic interest in this unique body of oral and literary heritage.
പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ തുടര്പതിപ്പുകളും പഠനങ്ങളും
1935-ലെ രണ്ടാം പതിപ്പുമുതല് കോട്ടയം അതിരൂപതയുടെ കോട്ടയം കാത്തലിക് മിഷന് പ്രസ്സ് പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ പതിപ്പുകള് തുടര്ച്ചയായി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചുവരുന്നു. നിലവില് പതിനൊന്നാം പതിപ്പിലെത്തിയിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന്റെ പതിനായിരത്തിലധികം പ്രതികള് ഇതിനകം അച്ചടിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഭാരതസഭയുടെ സുറിയാനി പൈതൃകം സംരക്ഷിക്കുകയും പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെ പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന നിരവധി സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളില് ഇന്നും പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ ഒരു പ്രതിപോലും ലഭ്യമല്ല എന്നത് ഖേദകരമാണ്. ഈ പാട്ടുകളുടെ ചരിത്രപ്രാധാന്യം ഇനിയും പൂര്ണമായി തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലെന്നതിന് ഇതു തെളിവാണ്. സുറിയാനി സഭയിലെ എല്ലാ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിലും പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ ഒരു പ്രതിയെങ്കിലും ലഭ്യമാണെന്ന് ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തിയശേഷം അവയുടെ പാരമ്പര്യത്തെയും കര്ത്തൃത്വത്തെയും കുറിച്ച് ചര്ച്ച ചെയ്തിരുന്നുവെങ്കില്, സഭയുടെ ചരിത്രപഠനത്തിന് പുതിയ വാതായനങ്ങള് തുറക്കാന് അത് സഹായകമായേനെ.
ഓരോ പതിപ്പും സൂക്ഷ്മമായ പഠനത്തിന്റെയും ഗവേഷണത്തിന്റെയും അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലാണ് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഈ രംഗത്ത് ഡോ. ജേക്കബ് വെള്ളിയാന്റെ സംഭാവന പ്രത്യേകമായി എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ടതാണ്. പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ അഞ്ചാം പതിപ്പുമുതല് പത്താം പതിപ്പുവരെയുള്ള പതിപ്പുകള് അദ്ദേഹം എഡിറ്റ് ചെയ്ത് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. കൂടാതെ ക്നായിത്തോമ്മായെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പാണന്പാട്ടുകള് ശേഖരിച്ച് പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തില് ഉള്പ്പെടുത്തിയതും അദ്ദേഹമാണ്.
പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളെ ചരിത്രരചനയുടെ പ്രഥമ ആധികാരിക സ്രോതസ്സുകളാക്കി മാറ്റുന്നതില് നിര്ണായക പങ്കുവഹിച്ച പണ്ഡിതനാണ് ഡോ. ജേക്കബ് കൊല്ലാപറമ്പില്. പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളെക്കുറിച്ച് പ്രത്യേക ഗ്രന്ഥം രചിച്ചിട്ടില്ലെങ്കിലും, ക്നാനായ സമുദായത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന കൃതികളുടെയും ഗവേഷണങ്ങളുടെയും അടിസ്ഥാന സ്രോതസ്സ് പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളാണ്. ബഹു. വെള്ളിയാനച്ചന് എഡിറ്റ് ചെയ്ത ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിലെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രപഠന ലേഖനവും പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളെ ആധാരമാക്കിയുള്ള ഗഹനമായ പഠനത്തിന്റെ ഫലമാണ്.
മാര്ത്തോമ്മാ ക്രൈസ്തവരെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ പഠനങ്ങളിലും, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് കൂനന്കുരിശ് സത്യം (1653), മാര്ത്തോമ്മാ ക്രൈസ്തവരുടെ ചരിത്രം, ആര്ച്ച് ഡീക്കന് പാരമ്പര്യം തുടങ്ങിയ വിഷയങ്ങളിലെ ഗവേഷണങ്ങളിലും പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളെ പ്രധാന ചരിത്രസ്രോതസ്സായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചരിത്രം, ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രം, സംസ്കാരം എന്നീ മേഖലകളെ സമന്വയിപ്പിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പഠനങ്ങള് കേരള ക്രൈസ്തവ ചരിത്രത്തിനും ക്നാനായ സമുദായ പഠനങ്ങള്ക്കും വിലമതിക്കാനാവാത്ത സംഭാവനകളാണ്.
അക്കാദമിക പഠനങ്ങള്
കേരളത്തിലെ വിവിധ സര്വകലാശാലകളില് എം.ഫില്., പി.എച്ച്.ഡി. ഗവേഷണങ്ങള്ക്കായി പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകള് വിഷയമായിട്ടുണ്ട്.
2001-ല്, സംക്രാന്തി ഇടവകാംഗമായ പ്രൊഫ. ബാബു തോമസ് പൂഴിക്കുന്നേല് ‘ക്നാനായരുടെ കല്യാണപ്പാട്ടുകള്: വഴക്കവും പൊരുളും’ എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. മഹാത്മാഗാന്ധി സര്വകലാശാലയില് ഡോ. ഡി. വിനയചന്ദ്രന്റെ മാര്ഗനിര്ദേശത്തില് എം.ഫില്. ബിരുദത്തിനായി സമര്പ്പിച്ച പ്രബന്ധത്തിന്റെ വികസിത രൂപമാണ് ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥം. ക്നാനായരുടെ കല്യാണപ്പാട്ടുകളെ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചുള്ള ഈ പഠനത്തില് മാതൃത്വവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പാട്ടുകളും വിവാഹചടങ്ങുകളുടെ സംക്ഷിപ്ത വിവരണവും ഉള്പ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കല്യാണപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ ആന്തരിക അര്ഥവും അവയുടെ ആചാരപരമായ പ്രസക്തിയും മനസ്സിലാക്കാന് ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥം സഹായകമാണ്.
സെന്റ് ജോസഫ്സ് കന്യകാസമൂഹാംഗമായ ഡോ. സി. ദീപ, ഡോ. സ്കറിയ സക്കറിയയുടെ മാര്ഗനിര്ദേശത്തില് കാലടി ശ്രീശങ്കരാചാര്യ സംസ്കൃത സര്വകലാശാലയില് പി.എച്ച്.ഡി. ഗവേഷണം പൂര്ത്തിയാക്കി. തുടര്ന്ന് 2011-ല് ‘നസ്രാണികളുടെ പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകള്: നാടോടിവിജ്ഞാന പഠനം’ എന്ന പേരില് ഈ ഗവേഷണം ഗ്രന്ഥരൂപത്തില് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
നാടോടിവിജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ വീക്ഷണകോണില് നിന്ന് പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ വിവിധ പതിപ്പുകളെ വിലയിരുത്തുന്ന ഈ പഠനം, പി. യു. ലൂക്കാസ് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ആദ്യ പതിപ്പുമുതല് ഇന്നുവരെയുള്ള എല്ലാ പ്രധാന പതിപ്പുകളിലുണ്ടായ മാറ്റങ്ങളും, അവയിലൂടെ ക്നാനായ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ സ്വത്വബോധത്തില് ഉണ്ടായ പരിണാമങ്ങളും വിശദമായി വിശകലനം ചെയ്യുന്നു.
കേരള സര്വകലാശാലയുടെ പൗരസ്ത്യപഠന ഫാക്കല്റ്റിയില് ഡോ. സൈനബ എം.യുടെ മാര്ഗനിര്ദേശത്തില് ഫാ. ബൈജു മാത്യു തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ‘തെക്കുംഭാഗ സുറിയാനി ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുടെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകള്: പാഠസംസ്കരണം’ എന്ന എം.ഫില്. ഗവേഷണപ്രബന്ധം, താളിയോലഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളെ ആസ്പദമാക്കിയുള്ള പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ ആദ്യ അക്കാദമിക പഠനമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഇതിന്റെ തുടര്ച്ചയായി അദ്ദേഹം ‘തെക്കുംഭാഗ സുറിയാനി ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുടെ പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകള്: പാഠസംസ്കരണവും പഠനവും’ എന്ന വിഷയത്തില് പി.എച്ച്.ഡി. ഗവേഷണം നടത്തിവരുന്നു. ലോകത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളില് സംരക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ എല്ലാ താളിയോലപ്രതികളും കണ്ടെത്തുകയും അവയെ ശാസ്ത്രീയമായി പഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക എന്നതാണ് ഈ ഗവേഷണത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന ലക്ഷ്യം.
ഇതിനുപുറമെ, ചുങ്കം ഇടവകാംഗമായ സൂസന് ഏലിയാസ് പുളിമൂട്ടില്, ഡല്ഹി ജാമിയ മില്ലിയ ഇസ്ലാമിയ സര്വകലാശാലയില് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സാഹിത്യത്തില് പി.എച്ച്.ഡി. ഗവേഷണം നടത്തിവരുന്നു. ക്നാനായരുടെ പുരാതനപ്പാട്ടുകളെയും ആചാരപരമ്പരകളെയും ആസ്പദമാക്കിയുള്ള ഈ ഗവേഷണം, ഈ അപൂര്വമായ സാംസ്കാരിക പൈതൃകത്തോടുള്ള അക്കാദമിക താല്പര്യം വര്ധിച്ചുവരുന്നതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ്.
