A number of misconceptions have arisen regarding this hymn, primarily due to a lack of familiarity with the Syriac language. Since the word Maryam (Mary) appears repeatedly in the text, some have mistakenly interpreted it as a prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary or as a hymn in her praise. Such interpretations are incorrect. The hymn is not addressed to Mary; rather, it is addressed to Jesus Christ, the Son of Mary and the Son of God.
Nor is this an invocation for blessing. Nowhere in the hymn does Jesus or God the Father impart a blessing, nor does the text contain a petition seeking divine blessing. Instead, the hymn commemorates Christ’s saving work and offers collective praise to Jesus, who is eternally worthy of all glory and adoration.
Because this hymn is traditionally sung in connection with Knanaya marriage celebrations, some have assumed that it refers to the Wedding Feast at Cana. However, this interpretation is unfounded. Nowhere in the text is the wedding at Cana—or Cana itself—mentioned. The association appears to have arisen solely from the liturgical and cultural context in which the hymn is sung, rather than from the actual content of the hymn.
