Classifying the Purathana Pattukal (Ancient Songs) as a corpus of Malayalam folk songs is both essential and challenging. Owing to their diversity in performance, function, and subject matter, no single classification system can adequately encompass all of these songs.
In the first printed edition (1910), P. U. Lucas categorized the songs into three broad groups:
- Women’s Songs (Penn Pattukal) – songs traditionally sung by women.
- Church Songs (Palli Pattukal) – songs associated with churches, religious themes, and ecclesiastical traditions.
- Men’s Songs (Aan Pattukal) – songs customarily performed by men.
This classification was primarily based on the performers and the context of performance.
Later, Babu Thomas proposed a more content-oriented classification, dividing the Purathana Pattukal into the following categories:
- Celebratory Songs
- Narrative Ballads
- Biblical Narrative Songs
- Church Songs
- Biographical Songs
- Pāṇan Songs (songs performed in the tradition of the Pāṇan community)
However, this classification also presents certain limitations. Many of the songs included under different headings were traditionally sung during Knanaya wedding celebrations, making it equally appropriate to describe them collectively as wedding songs. Likewise, the distinction between narrative ballads and biographical songs is often minimal, as both recount historical personalities and significant events in a narrative style.
These observations demonstrate that the Purathana Pattukal do not lend themselves to a uniform or single-criterion classification. Their themes, functions, performance settings, and performers frequently overlap, making rigid categorization impractical.
A more practical and flexible classification may therefore be based on two complementary criteria:
1. Classification by Performers
- Women’s Songs (Penn Pattukal)
- Men’s Songs (Aan Pattukal)
- Pāṇan Songs
2. Classification by Subject Matter
- Church Songs
- Historical Songs
- Heroic Ballads
- Entertainment and Recreational Songs
Such a dual classification better reflects the richness and complexity of the Purathana Pattukal. It recognizes both their social function within the Knanaya community and their literary and historical significance, offering a more comprehensive framework for folklore and literary studies.
